Article body
Share-repurchase programs at six U.S. companies split into two camps this period: names that kept buying and names that paused or froze authorization. The gap is a cleaner read on capital-allocation confidence than any single quarter of earnings. [1][2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] American Eagle Outfitters (AEO) is the sharpest pause. The retailer bought 3.0 million shares under its publicly announced program in the 13 weeks ended May 2, 2026, leaving 46,084,301 shares available. [1] It then repurchased no shares under that program in the 13 weeks ended August 1, 2026, with only 15,959 shares bought for tax withholding. [2] The halt was not new: in the prior 13 weeks ended November 1, 2025, AEO had already paused program repurchases, buying only 2,167 shares for tax withholding. [3] Broadcom (AVGO) moved in the opposite direction on authorization, then slowed execution. It bought 23 million shares in the fiscal quarter ended February 1, 2026, then authorized a new $10 billion program through December 31, 2026, following the quarter. [4] In the fiscal quarter ended May 3, 2026, Broadcom purchased only 2 million shares after its board authorized a $10 billion program in the second quarter of fiscal 2026. [5] Academy Sports & Outdoors (ASO) kept a steady cadence. The sporting-goods retailer repurchased 1,703,031 shares in the first quarter of 2026, reducing remaining authorization to about $338.2 million. [8] It then repurchased 1,608,528 shares in the second quarter of 2026, reducing remaining authorization to about $256.1 million. [9] RH (RH) sat still. The home-furnishings company had $201 million remaining under its share repurchase program as of January 31, 2026, the same amount reported as of February 3, 2024. [6][7] Braze (BRZE) and Chewy (CHWY) were in the six-company coverage set but carried no repurchase claim in this period. The pattern is not a uniform retreat from buybacks. It is a split: American Eagle paused, Broadcom authorized more and bought less, Academy Sports kept a two-quarter run, and RH left authorization untouched. That mix is the signal.
